Travis Jones began studying flute at the age of 10 through the 5th grade band program in a small Tennessee town. His first encounter with band instruments came when the band director gave every student a list of instruments available to rent. Although Travis was immediately attracted to the woodwind section, he had trouble deciding exactly which one he wanted to play. After looking up pictures of each instrument online, he chose the flute, admittedly because it was the shiniest one.
Once Travis had made his seemingly impulsive decision, it was his high-school flute teacher who really taught him to love the instrument. She helped Travis all the way through the college audition process, which lead to him attending Michigan State University under Professor Richard Sherman. After receiving his B.M. in Flute Performance, Travis completed his M.M. with Amy Porter at the University of Michigan. Besides playing with the Mobile Symphony, he has had the privilege of playing with a variety of orchestras such as the Shanghai Symphony, Mariinsky Orchestra, and Chautauqua Symphony.
When not practicing, Travis enjoys reading and traveling – especially to the beach…but practicing is fun too!
