Orchestra Librarian/Production Assistant
The Librarian is responsible for maintaining and operating the Mobile Symphony music library. The Librarian will provide support and work closely with the Music Director, Director of Operations, musicians, and guest conductors.

Job Summary
Librarian Responsibilities:
MUSIC PREPARATION
- Research the cost of procuring various music selections and understand available procurement options for live and streamed performances
- Prepare library budget under supervision of Director of Operations
- Make all arrangements relating to the purchase and rental of music (including licensing agreements), in coordination with the Music Director, Director of Operations, and/or guest conductors
- Ensure that all usage of musical materials adheres to copyright law as applicable
- Coordinate and ensure that all necessary bowings are created by the concertmaster and principal strings and then transfer the bowings to all parts in a timely manner
- Prepare orchestral transpositions and translate foreign language musical terms when needed
- Manage preparation of all music, including pages, bowings, cuts, and edits as requested by conductors, correcting errata, erasure of extraneous markings, distribution of parts and ensuring all elements correspond with conductor’s score
- Prepare materials for orchestra auditions as assigned, including coordinating with music publishers on works under copyright.
- Ensure that music is presented to musicians fully prepared and in a legible appropriate format
- Coordinate instrumentation and distribution of music with the Personnel Manager
- Provide librarian support for the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra as requested Rehearsal and Concert duties
- Attend all rehearsals and concerts, distribute original parts, troubleshoot music issues as they arise (missing parts, bad page turns, copies, etc.)
- Collect and file all music at the conclusion of the performance and ensure that rentals are returned in a timely manner
- Perform other duties as assigned
ORCHESTRA LIBRARY MAINTENANCE
- Maintain catalogue of library holdings and performance history database
- Ensure prompt return of rented or borrowed materials
- Maintain the orchestra’s collection of scores and parts, repair and maintain music and folders
- Maintain a collection of bowings from rental materials
- Catalogue and file music purchased for the orchestra library and maintain accurate inventory
- Track all items borrowed from the library and ensure their timely return
- Assemble and disassemble music folders
- Order and keep track of specific library office supplies
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Provide information to staff upon request (i.e. program listings, instrumentation requirements, and other information)
- Proofread programs (print and electronic)
- Assist in maintaining accurate orchestra performance records
- Review and submit invoices for music and supplies
- Report to all appropriate performance licensing organizations regarding music performed on all concert series
- Provide projected rental and purchase expense figures for planned repertoire during the budgeting process
- Assist artistic staff in the research and analysis of repertoire
- Maintain MSO archive
- Perform other duties as assigned
PRODUCTION ASSISTANT
- Obtain all tax documents from the orchestra members and file with Director of Operations
- Assist with concert production as needed, including load-in and load-out of equipment
- Assist with preparations for concert cycle
- Assist with green room responsibilities for the musicians of the orchestra
- Assist with guest artist care
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in music, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience
- Detail oriented
- A strategic thinker and problem solver
- High level of self-motivation and willingness to work hard
- Understanding and appreciation for the work of the organization
- Ability to work flexible hours, including late nights and weekend concert cycles
- Ability to learn quickly and on the job, especially with unfamiliar technology
- Strong written and verbal skills
- Proficiency in Mac and/or PC is required
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team
- Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Must be able to lift 30lbs

Part-time Strings/Preludes Teacher in Schools
Strings/Preludes teacher in Mobile and the Eastern Shore, AL (Multiple schools, violin, viola, cello – General music for 1st and 2nd grades)

Job Summary
The Mobile Symphony strings/preludes instructor is responsible for teaching violin, viola, and cello group classes to 2nd-8th grade students, and general music to 1st and 2nd graders in different schools in the Mobile and Baldwin county areas.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in string performance or education, or high level of performance in violin, viola, cello or bass
- Group or classroom teaching experience
- Pass a background check and demonstrate proper documentation if not a U.S. citizen.
Qualities
The ideal candidate will possess evidence of knowledge of strings and general music curriculum and the ability of implement it. Ability to interact collaboratively and with respect, with students, parents and administration. Excellent oral and written skills.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Planning and preparing lessons and classes
- Strings: Teaching 4-9 groups of string students (at school) or private students (at Larkins) Preludes: Teaching a normal size classroom of first and/or second graders
- Email/call/text string parents (or classroom teachers) to inform them of children’s progress, teacher cancellations, performances, etc.
- Twice a year meeting with string faculty and MSO selected staff
- Communicate with Education Director on a regular basis
- Must provide your own transportation
