Principal Oboist Patricia “Patty” Malone passed away in Mississippi after a brief illness. She was clearly one of the most beloved musicians on the Gulf Coast, particularly with our orchestra members and audience. After playing occasionally with the Port City Symphony, Patty joined the MSO as principal oboe in 2000.

“Patty and I joined the MSO the same year, and she was a remarkable musical collaborator for more than two decades – always pushing us to strive for the best,” said Scott Speck, music director.
In addition to the MSO, Patty performed with the Hattiesburg, Meridian, Jackson and Gulf Coast symphonies. She was a longtime faculty member of the University of Southern Mississippi School of Music where she taught oboe, music theory and music appreciation. Patty played the North American premier of Beethoven’s Oboe Concerto with the MSO in 2003. She will be greatly missed.
