We co-commissioned Jennifer Higdon's Mandolin Concerto, together with the Munich Philharmonic and Chicago Philharmonic, and now we are thrilled to perform it for you. In addition to welcoming Avi Avital, the first classical mandolinist ever nominated for a Grammy, we are delighted that Jennifer herself will be on hand to introduce the piece for you!
Two of Russian music’s most romantic masterworks make this an irresistible concert: Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 performed by Joyce Yang.
Brahms’ fourth symphony is a stellar masterpiece. We also feature Weber’s Euryanthe Overture and Caroline Shaw’s Music in Common Time featuring the University of South Alabama Concert Choir and Mobile Opera Chorus.
We contrast Howard Shore’s brilliant score to Lord of the Rings with orchestral highlights from Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Works include The Ride of the Walkyrie and Siegfried’s Rhine Journey, as well as music from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, the Two Towers and Fellowship of the Ring.
