SUMMARY:Beethoven and Blue Jeans
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 14\, 2020 | 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.\nSunday\, November 15\, 2020 | 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m\nScott Speck\, conductor\nRandall Goosby\, violin \nProgram: \nJohann Sebastian Bach | Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 in G major\, BWV 1048\nJoseph Boulogne\, Chevalier de Saint-Georges  | Overture L’Amant anonyme\nLudwig van Beethoven | Violin Concerto in D major\, opus 61 \nTickets on sale September 10\, 2020. \nWe will celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday with our ever-popular Beethoven & Blue Jeans casual concert. We’ll feature 22-year-old virtuoso Randall Goosby performing Beethoven’s violin concerto. \n“In November we bring you Beethoven and Blue Jeans in momentous fashion\, as we celebrate Beethoven’s 250th\,” Music Director Scott Speck says. “It’s not every day that a composer turns a quarter of a millennium! For the occasion we welcome Randall Goosby\, a stunning young violinist fresh from debuts with the New York Philharmonic and at Carnegie Hall\, praised for his ‘exquisite tone and sheer virtuosity.’ As always\, BBJ brings a mixture of old and new\, fresh and familiar\, for all to enjoy.” \n \nArtist Spotlight: Randall Goosby \nRandall Goosby will make his Mobile Symphony debut in November performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto as part of our celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. \nRandall began violin studies at the age of seven and made his solo debut with the Jacksonville (FL) Symphony at age nine. At the age of 13\, Randall was the youngest participant ever to win the Sphinx Concerto Competition. He is a recipient of Sphinx’s Isaac Stern Award and has made two appearances at Carnegie Hall as part of the organization’s Young Artist Development Program. The New York Times raved that in his Carnegie Hall debut performance of Ysaye Solo Sonata No. 3\, he “exerted a masterly level of control and lavished an exquisite tone … his performance won him a deserved standing ovation for its sheer virtuosity.” \nRandall has been featured on National Public Radio’s “From the Top\,” and he has been honored as a Rising Star of the Stradivari Society. Randall was a prize winner at the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions\, leading to his addition to the artist roster of Young Classical Artists Trust in London. As YCAT’s inaugural Robey Artist\, in partnership with London Music Masters\, Randall mentors and works closely with young musicians in schools around the UK. \nAs a soloist\, Randall has performed widely throughout the USA\, having appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra\, New York Philharmonic and the New World Symphony Orchestra\, among others. He has also given recitals at such venues as the Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.)\, Kaufman Center (NYC)\,  Detroit Chamber Music Society\, Buffalo Chamber Music Society and Harriman-Jewell Series (Kansas City\, MO). \nIn addition to his concerts\, Randall shares his love of music through community engagement programs for public schools\, children’s hospitals\, and music programs across the USA.  Through Concerts in Motion\, a non-profit organization in New York City\, he provides private house concerts for elderly and otherwise homebound patrons. In addition\, he gives private virtual performances for COVID-19 patients through Project Music Heals Us. \nRandall received a full scholarship to The Juilliard School’s Pre-College program and has earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from Juilliard under the tutelage of violinists Itzhak Perlman\, Catherine Cho\, Laurie Smukler\, and Donald Weilerstein. He is now pursuing an Artist Diploma at Juilliard\, where he will continue his studies with Mr. Perlman and Ms. Cho. Randall was a proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship throughout his collegiate studies at Juilliard. \nHe currently plays on a Guarneri del Gesu (1735) on generous loan from the Stradivari Society.

SUMMARY:Festival of Strings
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 17\, 2020 | 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.\nSunday\, October 18\, 2020 | 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.\nScott Speck\, conductor \nProgram:\nWolfgang Mozart | Divertimento in D major (16 minutes)\nstrings\nGeorge Walker | Lyric for Strings (6 minutes)\nstrings\nSamuel Barber | Adagio for Strings (8 minutes)\nstrings\nEdvard Grieg | Holberg Suite (20 minutes)\nstrings \nTickets on sale September 10\, 2020. \nWe open our season with an all-strings program headlined by American composer Samuel Barber’s beloved Adagio for Strings. \n“As we play together again for the first time\, our October concert expresses a mixture of emotions\,” Music Director Scott Speck says. “Of course we are overjoyed to be back together; and the concert begins and ends with pieces that are the very definition of boundless joy: Mozart’s Divertimento in D and the Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg. \n“To these we add a musical depiction of the collective sorrow we have all experienced this year: Barber’s Adagio\, and George Walker’s Lyric for Strings\,” Scott explains. “Taken together\, these pieces offer the full emotional range so characteristic of a performance of the Mobile Symphony.” \nAdagio for Strings is the best know work by American composer Samuel Barber and one of the most recognizable pieces of classical music in the world. It was arranged for string orchestra from the second movement of Barber’s String Quartet\, Op. 11. Often associated with sorrow and frequently described as the one work that rarely leaves a dry eye in the house\, it is nonetheless a true classical music hit. It has been used in many movies and television shows\, most notably Platoon\, The Elephant Man\, Le Norte and Lorenzo’s Oil. \nJust as Copeland’s Fanfare for the Common Man is America’s anthem for triumphant occasions\, Adagio for Strings is our soundtrack for mourning. It was broadcast over radio at the announcement of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death and broadcast on television at the announcement of John F. Kennedy’s death. The BBC Symphony Orchestra added it to the usually joyous “Last Night of the Proms” broadcast to commemorate September 11. Most recently\, it was played at the digital European Concert by the Berlin Philharmonic on May 1\, 2020\, for the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic. \nThe concert also features American composer George Walker’s Lyric for Strings. Walker\, who died in 2018 at age 96\, was an American composer\, pianist and organist\, and was the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Like Adagio for Strings\, Walker’s Lyric for Strings started life as a string quartet – his String Quartet No. 1\, composed in 1946. Over the next seven decades\, this string orchestra arrangement of the second movement became one of the most frequently performed orchestral works by a living American composer. \nClick here for Concert Safety Rules: https://mobilesymphony.org/news/concertsafetyrules \nSponsored By:\n\nLaura Lee Pattillo Norquist Charitable Foundation

SUMMARY:Eroica
DESCRIPTION:“As I see it Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Symphony is one of the most astonishing works ever composed — because\, like an asteroid blast\, it created a whole new era. With this one piece\, Beethoven dragged the whole world of music kicking and screaming into the Romantic period. A world premiere by Austin Wintory and a Mobile debut by astonishing violinist Paul Huang round out this unforgettable program. To play all these works together will be extraordinary — and we’re doing it all in blue jeans!” – Scott Speck\, Music Director \nThe Mobile Symphony’s popular Beethoven and Blue Jeans casual concert is back with Beethoven’s heroic Symphony No. 3\, Eroica! Beethoven became deeply disillusioned with his hero Napoleon\, for whom he wrote his third symphony. But our concert is right on target with heroic young violin virtuoso Paul Huang\, recipient of a prestigious 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. The concert also includes a world premiere of Austin Wintory’s latest work. The audience is encouraged to dress casually\, since even the orchestra will be in jeans and t-shirts. So\, dress down and leave uplifted! \nSingle tickets on sale August 21\, 2019. Tickets are $15\, $20\, $33\, $45\, $65 and $80 and can be purchased online\, by phone at 251-432-2010\, or at the symphony box office\, 257 Dauphin Street. SUMMARY:Forte
DESCRIPTION:In 1897\, the disastrous première of Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony threw his promising career as a composer into disarray. For three agonizing years\, he was unable to create anything significant. He found relief with the help of Dr. Nikolai Dahl\, a psychoanalyst. “The material for a new concerto accumulated\, and new musical ideas began to stir within me\,” he wrote. “By autumn I had completed two movements (the second and third)….These I played that same season at a charity concert\, with gratifying success….By the spring of 1901\, I had finished the first movement. Out of gratitude to Dr. Dahl\, I dedicated the concerto to him.” \nThe reasons for its enormous popularity are clear. It displays its emotions directly\, particularly warmth and melancholy. The themes are attractive and memorable\, and Rachmaninoff clothed them in lush orchestral colors. The solo part is brilliant\, mirroring the power and expressiveness of the composer’s magnificent performing skills. He performed it no fewer than 143 times\, and recorded it twice. \nProgram Notes by Don Anderson © 2018\nEnhance your concert experience with Take Note!  Join music experts and explore the world of classical music from an in-depth perspective. SUMMARY:Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the 1930s\, Orff produced a number of arrangements of early music. His researches in this area led to the creation of Carmina Burana. The texts come from a collection of earthy lyrics\, discovered in a Bavarian monastery and dating from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It contains some 200 drinking songs and love lyrics. Orff saw in it the ideal vehicle to express basic human emotions. \nThis work is enormous in both force and sound creating an experience that is nothing short of spectacular. \nEnhance your concert experience with Take Note!  Join music experts and explore the world of classical music from an in-depth perspective. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford headlined this sweeping romance\, set during the 1910s\, about a determined Dutch woman\, owner of a coffee plantation in Africa\, and her difficult relationships with the men in her life. \nIn a film composing career that ran for 40 years and involved more than 150 movies and TV shows\, Horner won a lofty reputation. His best-known score was for Titanic. His music for Avatar (2009) sweeps us away into a colorful and exciting world of adventure. \nWilliams is the most renowned modern-day film composer. His more than 100 scores for directors such as Steven Spielberg have brought him 51 Oscar nominations and five awards. He has also won success as conductor\, composer of concert music\, and recording artist. He is best known for such blockbuster fantasy series as Star Wars\, Indiana Jones\, and the first three films in the Harry Potter series. \nGreat composers are as essential as Hollywood stars. You’ll know why when we perform your favorite scores live. \nFebruary 9\, 2019 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nFebruary 10\, 2019 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor \nProgram:\nKorngold | Suite from The Adventures of Robin Hood\nBarry | Somewhere in Time\nBarry | Out of Africa\nHorner | Suite from Avatar\nGoldsmith | Star Trek VIII\nMorricone | The Mission\nWintory | Rendezvous\nWilliams | Harry Potter \nSponsored By:\nPaul & Anne Low\nAllan & Nancy Rowe

SUMMARY:Brahms' Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:By the time Brahms began work on this marvelous violin concerto in 1878\, he and Joseph Joachim had been friends for 25 years. One of the most outstanding musicians of the era\, Joachim won fame as violinist\, chamber musician\, conductor\, and composer. Like Brahms\, he wore conservative musical colors. Both of them favored the Classical poise and purity of Beethoven\, over the Romantic excess of such contemporary composers as Berlioz\, Liszt and Wagner. With Joachim as soloist\, and Brahms himself conducting\, the concerto received its première in Leipzig\, Germany on New Year’s Day\, 1879. \nVadim Gluzman’s extraordinary artistry brings to life the glorious violinistic tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries. Gluzman’s wide repertoire embraces new music and his performances are heard around the world through live broadcasts and a striking catalogue of award-winning recordings. \nJanuary 12\, 2019 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nJanuary 13\, 2019 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor\nVadim Gluzman violin \nProgram:\nSmetana | Bartered Bride Overture\nDvorak | Symphony No. 8\nBrahms | Violin Concerto \nSponsored By:\n\n\nJ.L. SUMMARY:Beethoven & Blue Jeans
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven’s friends have left ample evidence of his deep love of nature. Hardly a day passed when he didn’t take a long walk through the woods and fields surrounding Vienna\, drinking in the sights and sounds of the countryside. His sketchbook for his sixth symphony’s composition contained such musings as “leave the listeners to work out the situations for themselves\,” and “all tone-painting will lose its effect in instrumental music if pushed too far.” \nTime for Three is a group that defies any traditional genre classification\, happily and infectiously. With an uncommon mix of virtuosity and showmanship\, the American trio performs music from Bach to ingenious mash-ups of hits by the Beatles\, Kanye West\, Katy Perry\, Justin Timberlake and more. \nNovember 17\, 2018 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nNovember 18\, 2018 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor\nTime for Three string trio \nProgram:\nRossini | William Tell Overture\nBrubeck | Travels in Time for Three\nBeethoven | Symphony No. 6 \nSponsored By:\n\nJim & Karen Atchison

SUMMARY:Roman Festivals
DESCRIPTION:Respighi celebrated the past and present beauties of his beloved adopted city in three tone poems or suites: Fountains of Rome (1916)\, Pines of Rome (1924)\, and Roman Festivals (1928). \nHe attached a preface to the score of Roman Festivals\, setting out the scenes he intended it to evoke. \nCircenses: A threatening sky hangs over the Circus Maximus\, but it is the people’s holiday: Ave Nero! The iron doors are unlocked\, the strains of a religious song and the howling of wild beasts float on the air. The crowd rises in agitation: unperturbed\, the song of the martyrs develops\, conquers\, then is lost in the tumult. \nIl Giubileo (The Jubilee): The pilgrims trail along the highway\, praying. Finally appears the summit of Monte Mario\, to ardent eyes and gasping souls\, the holy city: Rome! Rome! A hymn of praise bursts forth\, the churches ring out their reply. \nL’Ottobrata (The October Festival): The October Festival in the Roman Castelli covered with vines: hunting echoes\, tinkling of bells\, songs of love. Then in the tender evening\, a romantic serenade. \nLa Befana (The Epiphany): The night before Epiphany in the Piazza Navona: a characteristic rhythm of trumpets dominates the frantic clamor: above the swelling noise float\, from time to time\, rustic motives\, saltarello cadenzas\, the strains of a barrel organ and the appeal of a barker\, the harsh song of the drunkard\, and the lively stornello in which is expressed the popular feeling\, “Let us pass\, we are Romans!” \nJoin us on a musical journey to the Eternal City as Respighi’s cinematic musical style brings ancient Rome to life. Tickets on sale September 4\, 2018. \nOctober 6\, 2018 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nOctober 7\, 2018 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor \nProgram:\nAdams | Short Ride in a Fast Machine\nStrauss | Rosenkavalier Suite\nBerlioz | Roman Carnival Overture\nRespighi | Roman Festivals \n\nSponsored By:\n\nThe Laura Lee Pattilo Norquest Charitable Foundation \nMedia Sponsor:

SUMMARY:HOUSE RULE (Beethoven/Mozart/Shostakovich)
DESCRIPTION:The composition of Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony took place during the height of Soviet Union oppression in his homeland of Russia. Though he was a composer and not soldier\, Shostakovich’s career was exploited to produce propaganda.  He had a successful opera condemned as unpatriotic and was forced to withdraw the premier of his 4th symphony for fear of punishment. Though the 5th Symphony is subtitled “A Soviet Artist’s Response to Just Criticism.”\, the piece is undeniably laced with themes of both defiance and deep mourning. The history of this piece makes it one of the most moving works of art. \nAt 94 years of age\, Menahem Pressler has held a long and illustrious career for over 70 years. He captivates audiences throughout the world as performer and pedagogue\, performing solo and chamber music recitals to great critical acclaim while maintaining a dedicated and robust teaching career. The six time Grammy Award nominee will be joining us to perform the captivating music of Mozart. \nApril 21\, 2018 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nApril 22\, 2018 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor\nMenahem Pressler piano \nProgram:\nBeethoven | Lenore Overture No. 3\nMozart | Piano Concerto No. 23\nShostakovich | Symphony No. 5 \n  \nSponsored by:\n\nSybil Smith Foundation

SUMMARY:RESURRECTION (Mahler)
DESCRIPTION:The Resurrection Symphony cemented Gustav Mahler’s fame as one of history’s foremost composers. This mammoth piece is known for its grandeur and scale. It requires a performing force which includes soloists and a chorus\, which the composer directed should be deployed beyond the confines of the stage itself. This will be the first time the Mobile Symphony Orchestra has taken on Mahler’s masterpiece.  We will be joined by three of the area’s finest choirs to create an experience that anyone would regret missing! \nMarch 24\, 2018 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nMarch 25\, 2018 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor\nSouth Alabama Concert Choir\nMobile Opera Chorus\nEastern Shore Choral Society  \nProgram:\nMahler |  Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” \n  \nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:TWO OF A KIND (Prokofiev/Haydn/Elgar)
DESCRIPTION:Music has a unique ability to bring people together from all walks of life. Elgar’s Enigma Variations is a literal testament to this fact. This piece is composed of 14 variations\, each of which is a musical caricature of family members and friends\, including his dog. Each variation is subtitled with different initials\, the first being C.A.E. which are the initials of his wife\, Caroline Alice Elgar. \nZuill Bailey will be our featured guest artist for Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2. Zuill recently won two Grammy awards for Best Instrumental Solo and Best Contemporary Classical Composition for his performance on “Tales of Hemingway\,” alongside the Nashville Symphony with conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. \nFebruary 24\, 2018 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nFebruary 25\, 2018 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nAndré Raphel guest conductor\nZuill Bailey cello \nProgram:\nProkofiev | Dances from Romeo and Juliet\nHaydn | Cello Concerto No. 2\nElgar | Enigma Variations \n  \nSponsored by:\n\nJ.L. SUMMARY:FOUR SEASONS (Golijov/Vivaldi/Piazzolla)
DESCRIPTION:Vivaldi was a master of his art in that he was capable of composing music which spoke more powerfully than words. The Four Seasons puts Vivaldi’s mastery on full display. For each season\, there is a corresponding concerto which provides a vivid musical portrait. Argentina’s tango master\, Astor Piazzolla took a different spin on this concept with his piece Four Seasons of Buenos Aires which exudes a distinct Latin flair. \nMobile favorite Chee-Yun will be returning to perform these incredible works. Her first public performance was at the age of 8 and by the age of 13 she had already performed with the New York Philharmonic. Since then\, Chee-Yun has performed with many of the world’s foremost orchestras. She plays the Stradivarius “Ex-Strauss” (Cremona\, 1708)\, which is on loan through the generous efforts of the Samsung Foundation of Culture of Korea and the Stradivari Society of Chicago\, Illinois. \nJanuary 20\, 2018 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nJanuary 21\, 2018 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor\nChee-Yun violin \nProgram:\nGolijov | Last Round\nVivaldi | The Four Seasons\nPiazzolla | Four Seasons of Buenos Aires \n  \nIn Memory of Judy Shirk:\nMary Josephine Larkins Foundation\nThe Shirk Family

SUMMARY:CONTRAST (Beethoven/Gershwin)
DESCRIPTION:Our annual Beethoven & Blue Jeans is a reminder that you don’t have to dress up to enjoy the Symphony. We welcome you as you are! \nWe are also celebrating the rich diversity that is classical music by contrasting two of the great masters. Beethoven’s 7th Symphony in many ways opened the door to a new era of classical music – the charismatic and evocative Romantic Era. You will likely recognize the famous dark and lush theme from the second movement that has been used in the soundtracks of movies such as The King’s Speech\, White House Down\, and X-Men: Apocalypse. Meanwhile Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F represents the thrill of orchestral jazz which you have come to know and love from Gershwin’s ever famous Rhapsody in Blue. The arrangement for this concerto will be provided and performed by Marcus Roberts Trio\, whose interpretation creates authenticity with their use of improvisational jazz breaks. \nNovember 18\, 2017 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nNovember 19\, 2017 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor\nMarcus Roberts Trio \nProgram:\nBeethoven | Symphony No. 7\nGershwin | Piano Concerto in F \n  \nSponsored by:\n

SUMMARY:FIREBIRD (Stravinsky/Tchaikovsky)
DESCRIPTION:The opening of our season will celebrate the rich history of Russian ballet. We will be joined by dancers from The Juilliard School to bring to life famous scenes from some of the world’s most popular ballets. In addition\, MSO will be partnering with the Mobile Museum of Art to bring you art inspired by Ballet Russes which will be presented by projection during the performance. \nMost of the pieces on this concert were premiered by or composed for the ballet company\, Ballet Russes. In 1909\, Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev founded this company in Paris. Though most of the dancers\, choreographers\, and composers were Russian\, the company never performed in Russia because of the tumultuous political climate. His company represents the Golden Age of ballet which not only revived a dying art form but also inspired a new movement of exploration for fine arts as a whole.   \nSeptember 23\, 2017 | 7:30pm-9:30pm\nSeptember 24\, 2017 | 2:30pm-4:30pm\nScott Speck conductor \nProgram: \nChabrier | Fete Polonaise\nDebussy | Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\nStravinsky | The Firebird\nStravinsky | Pulcinella\nStravinsky | Sacrificial Dance\nTchaikovsky | Excerpts from Sleeping Beauty \n  \nSponsors:\nThe Laura Lee Pattillo Norquist Foundation\n

SUMMARY:FROM THE OCEANS TO THE STARS
DESCRIPTION:Our season closes with a trip to the stars. Peter Maxwell Davies\, a longtime resident of the Orkney Islands off Scotland\, captures their powerful weather and rustic wedding traditions in a raucous barnburner that includes a strolling bagpiper! MSO Concertmaster Jenny Gregoire takes to the skies in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ gentle depiction of a bird in flight. And Gustav Holst’s astounding astrological journey takes us to the outer reaches of human aspiration.
